About Athens
The centre of arts, democracy, science and philosophy in the 5th century B.C, today this vibrant capital is home to around 4 million people.
Athens is one of the most magical cities in the world and many go there to enjoy its treasures: the Acropolis, a wealth of museums, the Agora, Hadrian's Arch, Temple of Zeus, the impressive neo-classical buildings near Syntagma, the Parliament buildings with the uniquely dressed 'Evzones' guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Stroll through Plaka, Athens' oldest district, which comes alive at night with people chatting and enjoying fabulous food at outdoor tavernas. Alongside sits modern Athens, the city which hosted one of the most successful Olympic Games of recent times.
The city centre is fairly compact and the excellent metro and tram system means that it's easy to get around. To get an idea of the scale of the city it is good to head up to the top of Lycabettus Hill - on a clear day you can see across to the Saronic Islands.
Why not enhance your stay in Athens with one or several of the day trips below, which are all available to pre-book with your Rediscover the World holiday.
We highly recommend a guided tour to help you get your bearings and to find out a little of the city's background. This can be arranged on a group or private basis. As well as full day trips to Delphi and the Argolis region you might also consider taking a relaxing cruise to explore three of the nearby Saronic Islands, an ideal way to pick up some varied souvenirs from your holiday!
